DESCRIPTION OF CLASSES

Bosun: The beginner class are our Bosuns. They learn on Escape Captiva boats. After passing a basic swim test, they are instructed in boat safety, sailors knots, parts of the boat, tides, and of course sailing itself. The goal is to have all beginner sailors sailing solo by the end of an eight week session.

Adventurers: It is designed for older beginners and those students who are not interested in racing, but want to continue sailing. The class will be limited in size and will be filled based on instructors recommendations and on a first come, first serve basis. They sail on Escape Captiva boats.

Captain:  Student in the Captain's class must be able to solo comfortably. Most will be introduced to racing, some may crew at times for the Admirals in the 420s, and will also still sail on Escape Captivas. A solid knowledge of navigation, sail trim, boat handling, and seamanship are required to pass the level of Captain. Weather awareness is another aspect of sailing the Captain will be introduced to.

Admiral: Our Admirals are the most experienced sailors. Sailing skills should show an ability to take care of their boat, from launch, through rigging, maintenance, and race prep. The Admirals sail 420 boats, and enjoy inter-club races with neighboring sailing clubs as well as occasional regattas at away locations. Admirals are also requested to aid teaching the bosun classes.

Every day of lessons and activities are ultimately determined by the weather and local conditions. In the interest of safety, not all sailing lessons are held on the water, some are held in the boat house.
